Embodied Books Project - Binding Together Illness, Art, and Learning - Dualism Book on Anxiety

"Are you interested in learning a new artistic skill? Do you have experiences with healthcare, illness, disability, caretaking, or other topic related to health?" I had the pleasure of participating in and contributing to the Dualism Books workshop that is part of a larger project called Embodied Books led by my dear friend and colleague, Dr. Darian Goldin Stahl.

For the Dualism Books workshop, Darian gave us the artistic prompt: "Participants were first challenged to construct a cover to a Do-Si-Do book, and then thoughtfully utilize the dualistic nature of a book that opens from the both the front and the back. They were prompted to use narrative, image, and multi-sensory elements in the manner of their choosing."

Darian further writes: "The purpose of Embodied Books is to investigate if and how creating and reading artists’ books (fine art that takes on the form of a book) can help us to understand these experiences in more complete or novel ways . . . By the end of Embodied Books, I hope to form a collection of participant-created artists’ books that will help future health researchers comprehend diverse encounters with medicine through a combination of text, image, touch, scent, time, and the gesture of turning pages . . . firmly believe first-person stories are vital to understand medicine from the patient’s perspective, and you can be a part of that progress."
